1. Hire a Career Coach<\/h3>\nHiring my career coach was the most brilliant and strategic move I made.\u00a0 She would help me to define the exact career I wanted for myself in this industry, what that role looked like and how to achieve it.\u00a0 She would help me with characterizing my strengths and opportunities and establishing strategic goals with deadline dates and holding me accountable for them.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” top_padding=”2%” bottom_padding=”2%” overlay_strength=”0.3″][vc_column enable_animation=”true” animation=”fade-in” column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” width=”1\/1″ tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]\n

2. Build Your Resume<\/h3>\nPart of my coach\u2019s services is resume building.\u00a0 She helped me tailor and update my resume to ensure it was accurately reflecting the positions I was seeking.\u00a0 It\u2019s very important to keep your resume up-to-date as you never know when you\u2019ll be asked to provide it.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t hire a coach, there are resume writing services that offer professional assistance and guidance to help you with building your resume.\n\nHaving been in the hiring role before, here are my top 3 other pieces of advice for your resume:\n
    \n \t
  1. DO<\/strong> \u2013 make sure your name, links and contact information are accurate. I\u2019ve called applicants back only to find their phone number was inaccurate.<\/li>\n \t
  2. DO<\/strong> \u2013 make sure your resume is professional in nature. It\u2019s okay to use a standard template, however, you do NOT want to add a picture of yourself on your resume or make use of pretty colors on your resume.<\/li>\n \t
  3. DO<\/strong> \u2013 make sure you spell check! I don\u2019t mean use<\/em> spell check, I mean use your pointer finger and make sure you check to ensure spelling accuracy. There have been many times resumes have come across my desk that are full of grammatical and spelling errors.\u00a0 Some I knew had been through spell check but were using the wrong instance of a word.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” top_padding=”2%” bottom_padding=”2%” overlay_strength=”0.3″][vc_column enable_animation=”true” animation=”fade-in” column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” width=”1\/1″ tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]\n

    3. Network<\/h3>\nIt\u2019s integral to your success for you to build your network.\u00a0 Attend local networking events and build your network.\u00a0 By doing so, building your network – especially with like-minded individuals – and establishing new relationships will help put you first in mind for people.\u00a0 These relationships will require nurturing and massaging but when done strategically, can be fruitful and help lead you to your dream position.\n\nIt would be neglectful not to briefly touch on social media and networking.\u00a0 It\u2019s imperative to have a LinkedIn account.\u00a0 I find that my profile gets viewed by perspective employers numerous times daily, and often head hunters will use this as their primary tool for, well, head hunting or finding the next great talent for their clients![\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” top_padding=”2%” bottom_padding=”2%” overlay_strength=”0.3″][vc_column enable_animation=”true” animation=”fade-in” column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” width=”1\/1″ tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]\n

    4. Belonging to\u2026<\/h3>\nI\u2019m a firm believer in belonging to associations.\u00a0 Not only does this build on point #3 (networking), it also provides you with opportunities to continue education, and to seek out job boards.\u00a0 Many associations, like the Decorators & Designers Association of Canada (DDA \u2013 formerly CDECA), partner with affiliates and will share job postings sometimes before the postings go public.\u00a0 Additionally, by belonging to an association, you may just find your mentor – a person that is willing to take you under their wing and teach you about the industry.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” top_padding=”2%” bottom_padding=”2%” overlay_strength=”0.3″][vc_column enable_animation=”true” animation=”fade-in” column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” width=”1\/1″ tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]\n

    5. Go Ol\u2019 Skool<\/h3>\nIn a day and age where many jobs are posted on job boards, and you apply with hundreds of other candidates through the same board, it\u2019s hard to stand out from the competition.\u00a0 I believe in the power of face-to-face interactions.\u00a0 Make sure you are seeking informational interviews where you get to meet with a hiring manager and discuss the role you\u2019re interested in with the company.\u00a0 Do what you think it\u2019s going to take to make you stand out from the competition.\u00a0 And, at the end of the interview, send a \u201cThank-you\u201d card. I actually put my \u201cThank-you\u201d card in the mail just before the interview.
