Regardless of the amount of time spent with your interior decorator clients, you want to keep your first-time customer coming back as repeat clients. Check out QC\u2019s online courses!<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/nav><\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Who_have_they_been_with\"><\/span>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Who have they been with?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\nYes!\u00a0 Just like we were taught in health class, it\u2019s very important to ask who you\u2019re client has been with \u2013 design-wise that is.\u00a0 Curiously ask, <strong>\u201cHave you worked with another designer\/decorator in the past?\u201d<\/strong> \u00a0You want to know the answer to this for a couple of reasons.\n\nIf they\u2019ve never worked with a designer\/decorator in the past, it allows you the opportunity to provide some insight into the decorating consultation experience and drive expectations.\u00a0 It also provides you with insight into their past relationships with other designers.\u00a0 If the client answers \u201cYes\u201d to this question follow it up with, <strong>\u201cWhy are you choosing to work with a new designer?\u201d<\/strong> \u00a0I find probing through this helps to gauge why they aren\u2019t working with the same decorator and provides some insight into their expectations.\n\nI once had a client who told me she had worked with another designer.\u00a0 When asked, she said she felt that after working with them, the two weren\u2019t on the same page. Fair enough. Later on, in our working relationship, I found out why she was really no longer with the designer.\u00a0 So, I learned to ask probing questions when I get a \u201cYes\u201d to this question.[\/vc_column_text][divider line_type=&#8221;No Line&#8221; custom_height=&#8221;50&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=&#8221;full_width_content&#8221; full_screen_row_position=&#8221;middle&#8221; scene_position=&#8221;center&#8221; text_color=&#8221;dark&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221; top_padding=&#8221;2&#8243; bottom_padding=&#8221;2&#8243; overlay_strength=&#8221;0.3&#8243;][vc_column enable_animation=&#8221;true&#8221; animation=&#8221;fade-in&#8221; column_padding=&#8221;no-extra-padding&#8221; column_padding_position=&#8221;all&#8221; background_color_opacity=&#8221;1&#8243; background_hover_color_opacity=&#8221;1&#8243; column_shadow=&#8221;none&#8221; width=&#8221;1\/1&#8243; tablet_text_alignment=&#8221;default&#8221; phone_text_alignment=&#8221;default&#8221; column_border_width=&#8221;none&#8221; column_border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221; delay=&#8221;250&#8243;][vc_column_text]\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Relationships_take_Work\"><\/span>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Relationships take Work<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\nLike any relationship, the client\/designer relationship requires building trust and collaboration.\u00a0 We do this by setting expectations, meeting deadlines, effectively communicating, and following through as promised.\u00a0 As stated earlier, we want our first-time customers to become repeat clients and our cheerleaders.\n\nTo do this, we need to have a good relationship with our client.\u00a0 I like to ask clients, <strong>\u201cWhat do you think makes the client-designer relationship successful?<\/strong>\u201d Understanding what your client thinks will help make your relationship successful is vital to growing a happy client-decorator relationship.\n\nExpect them to respond with the following requirements:\n<ol>\n \t<li>Honesty<\/li>\n \t<li>Shared Knowledge and Expertise<\/li>\n \t<li>Feeling Valued<\/li>\n \t<li>Being Heard<\/li>\n<\/ol>\nLike personal relationships, sometimes our business ones don\u2019t work out as we hoped. A question to ask your client is, <strong>\u201cHow will you measure the success of this project?\u201d\u00a0 <\/strong>By asking this, you are immediately able to develop your customized tangible and measurable goals (SMART GOALS) to ensure you are meeting AND exceeding the client\u2019s expectations.\n\nIt\u2019s also important to share how you intend to define the success of the project.\u00a0 Often, we make the mistake of assuming that our design will make the client happy because it\u2019s what we think is good \u2013 even if they have signed off on the design.\u00a0 But, as we know, there\u2019s so much more that goes into the success of the project, for instance: communication.\u00a0 Which leads me into my next question\u2026[\/vc_column_text][divider line_type=&#8221;No Line&#8221; custom_height=&#8221;50&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=&#8221;full_width_content&#8221; full_screen_row_position=&#8221;middle&#8221; scene_position=&#8221;center&#8221; text_color=&#8221;dark&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221; top_padding=&#8221;2&#8243; bottom_padding=&#8221;2&#8243; overlay_strength=&#8221;0.3&#8243;][vc_column enable_animation=&#8221;true&#8221; animation=&#8221;fade-in&#8221; column_padding=&#8221;no-extra-padding&#8221; column_padding_position=&#8221;all&#8221; background_color_opacity=&#8221;1&#8243; background_hover_color_opacity=&#8221;1&#8243; column_shadow=&#8221;none&#8221; width=&#8221;1\/1&#8243; tablet_text_alignment=&#8221;default&#8221; phone_text_alignment=&#8221;default&#8221; column_border_width=&#8221;none&#8221; column_border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221; delay=&#8221;250&#8243;][vc_column_text]\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Communication_is_Key\"><\/span>4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Communication is Key<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\nAs designers\/decorators, communication is extremely important to the success of our projects.\u00a0 We need to be excellent communicators with our teams, our partners (ie. trades and suppliers), and of course, our clients.\n\nCommunicating occurs in verbal and written forms and everyone has their own preference of how they like to receive communications.\u00a0 Your key question to ask is, <strong>\u201cWhat type of communication (phone, email, text, etc.) works best for you?<\/strong>\u201d This allows you to find out the best method of communication for your client. And your follow-up to this is, <strong>\u201cWhat is your typical response time for returning calls and responding to emails?\u201d <\/strong>which helps you understand why you might not hear from them for a day or two.\n\nYou\u2019ll definitely want to tailor this to help your client understand that you value their time and the importance of communication in the relationship.\u00a0 It\u2019s at this point in the conversation that I make it very clear that I have a 24 hour response time to any form of communication. After 7pm I\u2019ll respond the next day and my business is closed on Sundays for well-deserved family time.
