When networking with design professionals<\/a>, I meet many brilliant women. Women who have had extremely successful careers holding very respected positions. One commonality has become increasingly apparent amongst these talented individuals. This commonality is that many are on a new career path\u2013 and they\u2019re doing this as they approach their 40s.\n\nThese are some of the reasons why they\u2019re taking on a second career<\/a>:\n\n\u201cTo take back control of their life.\u201d<\/em>\n\n\u201cBurnt out.\u201d<\/em>\n\n\u201cSick of working for someone else.\u201d<\/em>\n\nThough it\u2019s a story heard all too often, it\u2019s empowering to hear about women taking back control over their lives, earning potential, and time. And men, please don\u2019t think I\u2019ve forgotten about you because this scenario, although less common, still occurs.\n\nMy own story isn\u2019t very different. I had a successful career, but I was burnt out, underappreciated, and over-worked (400+ OT hours a year for 6 years). It had left me with little time for my family let alone myself. And so I knew, like all these men and women I\u2019ve met over the years, that it was time for change.\n\nBut in my late 30s with mouths to feed and bills to pay, my thoughts went from \u201cAre you insane to do this now?!\u201d to \u201cWhat are you going to do?\u201d to \u201cCan I make this happen?\u201d to \u201cI\u2019m going to do this. I\u2019ve got to figure it out.
