They\u2019ll find a wealth of blogs, lists, pin boards, and vlogs telling them the best ways to get their homes organized and keep them that way. Some of the information online is very useful and will help your clients get an idea of what to expect from working with you.\n\nThe problem with Internet \u201ctips and tricks,\u201d however, is that not every post is written by professionals. Often, the advice your clients will find comes from another client\u2019s personal experience. Those tips might have worked well for that person\u2019s space, but that doesn\u2019t make them the best strategy for your client\u2019s home. Buy containers first<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15012\" src=\"https:\/\/www.qcdesignschool.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Design-Blog-In-Post-130x130-75.jpg\" alt=\"storage containers for professional organizing\" width=\"850\" height=\"500\" \/>\n\nCommon tip: There\u2019s no sense in starting the organization process if you don\u2019t have anywhere to put things! The best first step is to buy drawers, racks, or bins to neatly place things in.\n\nReality: Buying containers before you\u2019ve cleared out the space can actually do the opposite of what you\u2019re hoping.\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n \t<li>Buying drawers and racks before you\u2019ve de-cluttered and analyzed the room might just take up more space<\/li>\n \t<li>Buying too many containers because you don\u2019t know what you\u2019re keeping yet wastes money<\/li>\n \t<li>Buying too few containers because you didn\u2019t anticipate how much stuff there was wastes time because you\u2019ll need to go back for more<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nDe-clutter first and organize second. It\u2019s true that you\u2019ll need space to put things in order to start organizing, but you can probably create that space by clearing out things that your client doesn\u2019t need. Once you\u2019ve de-cluttered, you\u2019ll see how much space you already have to work with and how much storage you need to create.\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Get_it_done_at_once\"><\/span>2. Get it done at once<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\nCommon tip: Organization can be tackled in a day if you just make the time to get it done. Set aside eight hours and dive right in. It\u2019ll feel like a marathon, but the sooner you get it done, the better you\u2019ll feel.\n\nReality: Barely anyone, professional or otherwise, can organize an entire space from start to finish in one day. You might clean the room in that time, but you won\u2019t solve the problem. Trying to marathon-organize with a time limit:\n<ul>\n \t<li>Puts pressure on the situation<\/li>\n \t<li>Tires you out<\/li>\n \t<li>Increases stress if you don\u2019t finish<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15013\" src=\"https:\/\/www.qcdesignschool.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Design-Blog-In-Post-130x130-76.jpg\" alt=\"trying to organize your home all at once\" width=\"850\" height=\"500\" \/>\n\nOrganization is a process. Work on the space in sections of time so you can analyze what needs to be done as you go. Help your clients understand that de-cluttering, cleaning, and establishing a better system of organization takes longer than one eight hour work day. Trying to cram it into that time frame could result in frustration and poor results.\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Get_it_done_at_all_costs\"><\/span>3. Get it done at all costs<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\nCommon tip: It doesn\u2019t matter what order you do things in, as long as you get them done! If you\u2019re tired of one task, set it down for now and move onto another. The goal is just to get it done.\n\nReality: You should organize in steps. If you don\u2019t have the energy to finish one part of the process, don\u2019t move on to the next thing yet. Put it down, take a break for a couple hours, and come back to it.\n\nTry not to move on until you\u2019ve finished what you started. You won\u2019t have much luck organizing a room if the process itself is disorganized. Leaving loose ends unfinished will:\n<ul>\n \t<li>Make a bigger mess<\/li>\n \t<li>Get in the way of other projects<\/li>\n \t<li>Confuse you and slow you down<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nTake it one step at a time and finish each one completely before you move on.\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Do_it_yourself\"><\/span>4. Do it yourself<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\nCommon tip: Help is nice, but only your client knows what they need, use, and can afford to get rid of. Letting friends help you organize can get stressful and you\u2019ll spend all day telling them what to do. You\u2019ll probably get things done more effectively yourself.\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15016\" src=\"https:\/\/www.qcdesignschool.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Design-Blog-In-Post-130x130-78.jpg\" alt=\"neatly folded clothes\" width=\"850\" height=\"500\" \/>\n\nReality: Having a client\u2019s friend give input while you organize is beneficial.\n<ul>\n \t<li>They can give you new perspective<\/li>\n \t<li>They\u2019re an outside view, but they visit often enough to know the space<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nListen to others to learn what the real problems are. You might think the solution is to get your client\u2019s massive DVD collection under control so guests can actually sit down. Your client\u2019s friend, however, can tell you that the real problem is the couch itself. You thought the sofa looked lumpy underneath the blanket, but it\u2019s really a huge throw pillow collection that consumes anyone who sits down!\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Expecting_too_much\"><\/span>5. Expecting too much<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\nCommon tip: Check out the pictures on blogs, pin boards, and in magazines to get inspiration, ideas, and motivation. Your space could look just like that when you\u2019re finished!\n\nReality: Pictures that look like they came from a catalogue are certainly motivating, but remind your client that no one\u2019s home ever stays like that. Unless they organize every day, hire a cleaner, or stop using the room all together, it simply won\u2019t look as pristine as the blogs every single day.\n\nEven well-organized spaces need to be re-organized. Your clients use the rooms in their home, so keeping them coordinated is an ongoing task. The work you do now, however, will:\n<ul>\n \t<li>Stop clutter from taking over other spaces<\/li>\n \t<li>Relieve stress at least temporarily<\/li>\n \t<li>Take care of mess at its source rather than just making it look tidy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"You_know_more_than_you_think\"><\/span>You know more than you think<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15017\" src=\"https:\/\/www.qcdesignschool.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Design-Blog-In-Post-130x130-79.jpg\" alt=\"professional organizing of kitchen\" width=\"850\" height=\"500\" \/>\n\nTips and tricks from popular sources can be very helpful, but you\u2019re the expert.
