Here are a few best practices to get your career off the ground, and on the right foot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19337 size-full alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.qcdesignschool.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Design-Blog-In-Post-130x130.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"850\" height=\"500\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3>Don&#8217;t be afraid to ask for help<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Starting your own business can be exciting, but terrifying. The good news is you don\u2019t have to do it alone! Don\u2019t be afraid to seek out experts\u2019 help, especially when establishing your business. If you completed your business training in your online decorating course, you likely already have a good business plan that\u2019s been reviewed by your tutor. Now it\u2019s time to put that plan into practice. Other experts you can consider are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>An accountant or bookkeeper to help set up your business financials<\/li><li>A lawyer to review your business contracts<\/li><li>A graphic designer to help put together your logo and brand identity<\/li><li>A web developer to set up your website<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t need to hire all of these professionals if you\u2019re confident in doing some of these yourself. But there\u2019s no shame in admitting you need help when you\u2019re uncomfortable taking on a task. Getting help from experts <em>now<\/em> can avoid tons of heartache <em>later<\/em>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Take the time to set up your brand<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s tempting to hastily decide on a business name, launch a generic website, and start soliciting clients.&nbsp; Your business will be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qcdesignschool.com\/2018\/01\/cant-get-design-business-off-ground\/\">much more successful<\/a> in the long run, though, if you take the time to establish a reliable brand. This includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Establishing a brand identity and focus<\/li><li>Researching your target audience<\/li><li>Developing your marketing materials<\/li><li>Focusing on your customer service efforts<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember: brands who have a solid identity, and focus on two or three types of customers are much more successful than brands that try to appeal to the masses. You don\u2019t want to end up as a Jack-of-all-trades &#8211; but master of none.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19338 size-full alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.qcdesignschool.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Design-Blog-In-Post-130x130-1.png\" alt=\"designer viewing carpet samples\" width=\"850\" height=\"500\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3>Don&#8217;t accept exposure as payment<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the age of social media influencers, everyone tries to get a free meal. It can be easy as a new designer to fall into the trap of offering \u201cfree\u201d services in exchange for exposure. <strong>This. Does. NOT. Work<\/strong>. You\u2019re a <em>professional<\/em>, and you have to pay the bills. Never be ashamed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qcdesignschool.com\/2018\/06\/design-services-charging-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">charge for your services<\/a>.&nbsp; This includes working for friends or family. Offering a modest discount to friends and family is one thing, but don\u2019t let acquaintances bully you into working for free!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qcdesignschool.com\/2018\/04\/5-ways-to-build-your-design-portfolio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">some alternatives<\/a> that are more effective than offering free services:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Do work for a local charity \u201cat cost\u201d.<\/strong>&nbsp; You can gain a lot of good press by helping do design work for a local women\u2019s shelter, for example. You won\u2019t make a profit, but you also won\u2019t lose money, and your generosity (and talent) will shine!<\/li><li><strong>Offer free consultations as a promotion.<\/strong> A one-hour consultation costs nothing but your time, and can lead to paying clients. It\u2019s a great way to use the word \u201cFREE\u201d in your marketing materials <em>without<\/em> actually compromising on your pricing.<\/li><li><strong>Offer incentives for referring clients.<\/strong> Instead of offering discounts or free services, consider paying people to refer clients your way. In this case, \u201cpaying\u201d doesn\u2019t have to be with money!&nbsp; Maybe you gift something tangible to anyone who sends you a client referral. Then, once that client signs a contract, you give the person who provided the referral a Starbucks gift card, or concert tickets, etc. You\u2019d be surprised what people will do for free stuff!<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When you start your new business, you might be surprised with just how many people try to negotiate with you, and then attack you and your business when you don\u2019t compromise. These people are called \u201cchoosing beggars\u201d. They\u2019re never happy unless you bend to their every will. The best thing you can do is ignore them and focus on clients who intend to pay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-19340 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.qcdesignschool.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Design-Blog-In-Post-130x130-2.png\" alt=\"interior decorator shows happy couple a wooden sample\" width=\"850\" height=\"500\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3>Focus on excellent customer service<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Businesses live and die on their reputation. There\u2019s no easier way to ruin your reputation than treating your customers like inconveniences, rather than valued clients. You need your customers more than they need you! Treat them that way:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Respond to all communications promptly.<\/strong> Have clear business hours so customers know when they can (and can\u2019t) reach you.<\/li><li><strong>Always be professional.<\/strong> Don\u2019t use foul language, and make sure all your written communications use proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation.<\/li><li><strong>Don\u2019t engage with trolls.<\/strong> Especially on social media, keep your cool when you disagree with someone. If you get a negative review, make sure you\u2019re calm before you deal with it.<\/li><li><strong>Go the extra mile.<\/strong> Proactively reach out to clients to keep them abreast of your work. Never wait until a client asks for an update. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qcdesignschool.com\/2018\/03\/5-reasons-employers-love-professional-organizer-certification\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Let them be thrilled<\/a> with your level of service!<\/li><li><strong>Under-promise and over-deliver.<\/strong> No one likes a missed deadline or a broken promise. Try not to be that person! It\u2019s perfectly acceptable to give your client a deadline that includes some wiggle room, in case mistakes happen. Customers will be thrilled if you complete tasks ahead of schedule!<\/li><li><strong>The customer isn\u2019t always right, but he always deserves respect.<\/strong> You don\u2019t have to bend over backwards to accommodate every customer, but you <em>do<\/em> have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qcdesignschool.com\/2019\/02\/how-to-say-no-to-your-interior-decorating-clients\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">to treat every customer with deference and respect<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Always remember, it can take weeks or even months to gain a new customer, and only a second to lose her!
