What motivated you to start your career as a professional designer?
While working as a Merchandiser and Design Consultant with Hogar Home Décor for the past couple of years, I had been given much room for creativity and to develop organizational and people skills. I absolutely love taking what a client already has and transforming the room to give it more life.
What are some highlights of your career so far?
I am particularly proud of my “GO GREEN” article in the April 2008 issue of Canadian Living Magazine. You can “Green up your house” by transforming your living space using eco-friendly home decor.
How did your course prepare you for working in the field?
Taking QC Design School’s Interior Decorating course helped train my eye to recognize, and work with, the tastes of each client and immediately single out areas that need improvement in any space. It also helped me learn the tools of the trade and jumpstart my portfolio.
Do you have any advice for anyone starting out with their training or career?
Trends and decorating strategy in the design industry are constantly changing, so it is important to stay current by visiting trade shows, reading design magazines and websites, and joining professional organizations. As I'm located within the GTA, I have joined a Canadian design agency called CDECA. Although becoming certified as a design professional is not absolutely necessary, I would definitely recommend receiving certification. This is my final piece of advice. It’ll make you stand out to your prospective clients, and give you the foundation needed to launch a successful career.
