Starting your professional organizer training is a step in the right direction—you’ll be helping to make your clients’ lives much easier and more manageable in no time! So, what will your course assignments look like? And is an online professional organizing course as beneficial as in-class? Let’s run through how these courses work together…
First, your online training is extremely hands-on! Yes, you’ll submit your assignments online—but you’ll have to do the work in real life. Practical and theoretical assignments make up the base of your training! Once you finish all of your assignments, you’ll be receive your pro organizer certification. The more practise what you learn, the sooner you’ll be a whiz with any client you encounter!
To give you a taste of just how a theoretical assignments works in your online training, have a quick look at an assignment preview. Now, this assignment has information AND questions built into to it. But, for our purposes, this will give you a sneak peek at the type of skills you’ll develop in Unit D of the course:
Client Name: Mr. Mike Brady
Goal: Create a family room in the basement
- Newly blended family includes client’s three teenage sons (who visit one weekend per month), wife’s two toddler daughters, and a baby on the way
- Basement includes a nanny’s suite
Now that you have the basics, let’s get into the first encounter…
Client: “Mrs. Kravitz? I’m Mike Brady. Sorry it took me a few minutes to get to the door. Was on the phone. Again. Sons are cancelling their weekend. Again. Means I have to reschedule the courts. Which reminds me, got to get that case wrapped up early today. My turn for the pre-school pickup. Busy, busy, busy! Ok. Going to get this show on the road, right? Right. So. Boy, I hope that rambling of mine didn’t just cost me a bundle. Just how MUCH is this costing me? Carol, my wife, she’s the one who finally called you. Told her I’d get to it but what with the ex and the firm, just made partner. By the way, as my boys say, which reminds me, the boys, that’s really why you’re here. Got to get that basement ship-shape for them…How much did you say…?”
PO: “I didn’t…yet! Boy you DO have your hands full don’t you? How do you manage it all?”
In the first conversation with your client, you’ll get a good idea of what their personality is. Plus, you’ll probably get their top pain points (which are the reasons they called you!). Taking notes as a professional organizer will give you insights into how your client lives, and which aspects are the most important to start with!

1. Based on the client profiles discussed in “Unit D: Client Interactions” from the course book titled “A Guidebook for the Professional Organizer”, which client type(s) would Mr. Brady be classified as?
For this question, you should review your previous lesson on client interactions. It will refresh your memory on how to handle the first client meeting by recognizing the type of client you’re working with.
2. Based on Mr. Brady’s client type(s), how should you approach him?
Approaching and speaking to your clients in a manner designed for their specific personality is a crucial skill for organizers to master. If you’re dealing with a client who has a hectic life they could be prone to stress—you’re there to help, not to stress them out more! Focus on what you would say to the client, as well as how you would proceed with the client.
3. Rather than invite the client to continue his litany of complaints and his growing To-Do list by saying, “Boy you DO have your hands full….”, what COULD the PO have said to re-direct the conversation?
It’s important to know how to redirect conversation as a professional.
This saves time for both you and your client, which is important for busy schedules! Keep the topic on your job, and how you can provide a solution for the client.
Overall, your theoretical assignments will involve a lot of looking through previous lessons and assignments. You want to make sure you have the right answers for every client and situation, so keep your course materials on hand! It’s always worth it to flip back a few pages to refresh your memory.
